Filomena Guarda

FILOMENA VIANA GUARDA, born in 1958, studied Modern Languages and Literature (English and German Studies) at the Universities of Coimbra (Portugal) and Munich (Germany), and took her five-year degree in 1981. She received her MA from the University of Lisbon in 1988 with a dissertation on Jeremias Gotthelf, a Swiss writer from the 19th century, and in 1998 her Ph.D. from the same University with a dissertation on Martin Walser, a German contemporary writer.

From 1981 until 1988 she worked as a High School teacher; from 1988 until 1998 she was Assistant Lecturer for German literature and culture in the German Department at the University of Lisbon and in 1998 became Assistant Professor in the same Department.

She has published a number of articles on German and Swiss Writers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries such as E.T.A.Hoffmann, Robert Walser, Botho Strauβ, Christa Wolf, Martin Walser, Thomas Hürlimann, Peter Schneider, Irina Liebmann, Michael Kleeberg and Marcel Beyer. Currently she is coediting a book on ‘Space, Memory and Absence’ that will appear very soon, as well as working on Third-Generation World War II Narratives (within a project about memory and representation).
