Gabriela Fragoso
Gabriela Fragoso studied at the University of Lisbon and was Lektorin for Portuguese Language and Literature at the University of Cologne (1984-1988). She is affiliated to the Department of German (Universidade Nova de Lisboa) where she also completed her Ph.D. on July 1999. She is particularly interested in German Literature and Culture of the Eighteenth Century, in the relation between Literature and Science (particularly Ecology) and in German Children’s Literature.
She has translated books from the German (Stefan Zweig, Franz Kafka, Alexander von Humboldt) and published articles on the interrelations between literature and science. Her current project, carried out in collaboration with the University of Lisbon and the University of Cologne deals with the work and thought of Garcia de Orta (a Portuguese physician and botanist of Jewish origin) and Alexander von Humboldt (a Prussian geographer, diplomat and anthropologist). She co-organized an international and interdisciplinary conference ( “Garcia de Orta and Alexander von Humboldt – wanderings, research and dialogues among cultures”), held in May 2007 at the Lisbon Geographic Society in May 2007.
