João Chaves
Teacher of Spanish language, culture and translation at the Portuguese Catholic University in Lisbon for the last six years, João Chaves (Lisbon, 1979) has a five year degree in English and Spanish Translation, an M.A. on Cultural Studies (Film Studies, Gender Studies and American Culture) and is currently writing his doctorate’s thesis on memory and film. Furthermore he is the Head of the Internship Programme for students of foreign applied languages and translation at the same University, and one of the scientific assistants and researchers at the Centre for Communication and Culture (CECC) of the Portuguese Catholic University, working mainly on American studies, Film studies, Gender studies and Cultural studies.
In addition he was a member of a research group about New York having presented a paper about the representation of the Empire State Building in Love Affair(s) and Sleepless in Seattle. In the following-up of the 27th APEAA (Portuguese Association for English and American studies) Meeting, he presented and published an article on the representation of masculinity(ies) in the movies. Moreover, he has participated on a Summer School in cooperation with the Annenberg School of Communication (U. Pennsylvania) held at the Portuguese Catholic University.
